In the article, Is Taylor Swift Still Country? Do We Care? by Dave Heaton we get a really good description about Swifts variety of genres between her songs. Heaton explains to us that Taylor swift not only has songs topping the charts in the country music genre, but the same songs are also fairly high up on the pop genre music charts. Heaton uses the example of the song Teardrops on my Guitar. This song topped country music charts and also was #13 on the pop music charts. I found this article to be interesting because as I am a country music fan, Taylor Swift’s music is something that tends to be a hit or a miss for me. I think this is because she goes from country songs to pop songs all within the same CD. I really liked how Heaton went about writing this article. Although he seemed to use Taylor Swift as a prime example, I understood that he was working to find the true definition behind the country music genre. With both of these being a question in mind, I agree with Heaton that it is a challenge to label Taylor Swift as a specific genre artist because genres have a tendency to overlap and not necessarily have any specification to there qualifications.

ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your response to this article and I would have to say that in the past I was a country music fan. That is until artists started moving away from instrumentation an they focused more on vocals and the act they call a concert. This new sort of pop country has 100% turned me away from any kind of country and has made me despise it. I suppose my main concern is that these artists label their albums as country and they miss the mark, which I think waters down the roots of the country genre.
ReplyDeleteI am not the biggest country fan because the music just doesn't interest me, some songs do but most of them don't. Especially Taylor Swift. Her music just seems to all be about the same stuff. But I have to say it is really impressive though to be on the top charts for two different genres of music.
ReplyDeleteThis is a really big topic right now with her new CD that just came out. Personally before I was really into country music I really enjoyed Taylor Swift. However now that I am really into country music I don't really enjoy her newest songs as much.
